Coast 2 Coast - Day 3 - Jacumba to Calexico

This day brought us a glorious ride, though with some reservations.

We started the day with a 5 mile climb (though not too step), but then got onto I-8 again and went downhill for 13 miles at a 4-6% downhill grade. We quickly got up to an average speed of 30 mph, with a peak at one point of 41 mph. But we needed to keep our speed under control, as there was a 20 mph crosswind coming down the pass.

We ended up dropping about 2900 feet over those 13 miles.

And from then on we were in the Imperial Valley, moving into desert country, with a temperature of 75 F, rather than the 50 F that we started the day with.

The new scenery was dramatic:

At our second SAG (Support And Gear) stop, we had our usual array of water and snacks to keep us going:

And, near the SAG stop there was a Geocache, which we went and found with a 'newbie':

Also, just before reaching the SAG stop, Hance had his first flat. So the score is now Anne - 2 flats and Hance 1.

We finished our ride in Calexico, which is a relatively small border town, across the border from the much larger Mexicali. We staying in a school gymnasium, located just across the street from the border wall:

Overall, it was a 51 mile day, with an average speed of 13.7 mph, and a maximum speed of 41 mph.

Tomorrow will be a 65 mile day to Yuma AZ - a new state!
