Half the group on our tour took advantage of being in the Big Bend region to take a road trip (a 2+ hour drive each way) to visit the Big Bend National Park. The rest of us decided to rest.
Which for us meant that we were able to wake up for the 7:30 breakfast (on a bike tour you don't skip meals, even on rest days), and then go back for a nap until 11AM.
Having rested, we explored the town of Marathon. They have a grand old hotel in town - the Gage Hotel:
and an old fashioned grocery store - The French Co. Grocer:
We had lunch at the only lunch restaurant in town, the Oasis:
and then walked over to the other side of the railroad tracks to the Gage Garden (where they have real green grass!):
Further afield is a neighborhood of strange (!) dwellings (which we hear are available on AirBnB):
We also found what appears to be an abandoned jail:
Finally, we returned to the main street and had a nice barbecue and beer at the Brick Vault:
The rest day ended with a magnificent sunset, in three stages:
