Rest Day 2 - Columbus NM and Palomas Mexico

Our second rest day came on a Saturday, after a hard week of bad weather, and was very welcome. Because this rest day came in the border town of Columbus NM, we made a group trip across the border to Palomas, Chihuahua, Mexico.

Columbus is the site of the raid by Pancho Villa that prompted Woodrow Wilson to send Black Jack Pershing and the US Expeditionary Force into Mexico in pursuit of Villa. So Pancho Villa is well known on both sides of the border, including a state park in Columbus and a statue in Palomas:

The statue is in the square just south of the border, and across the street from is "The Pink Store", where everyone on a day trip into Mexico goes for shopping, eating and some Mexican culture:

While in Columbus, we are staying at the local elementary school, which is very nice, and which celebrates the local area with an impressive mural:

Tomorrow we're off to El Paso, Texas.
